A petition launched on the White House’s We The People official website asking President Obama to appear on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher reached 100k signatures within days.
Surpassing the 100k threshold means the White House would respond to the request, according to the website. The petition asks the president to appear on the show.
“We the people, especially viewers of Real Time with Bill Maher, respectfully request that President Obama appear on Real Time and thereby honor that particular audience (and their support for him), as he has so honored the viewers of so many other TV shows and media outlets; or if not, to please, respectfully, tell us why,” read the petition.
Although it is not clear what topics would be discussed if the president does decide to appear on the show, the petition lists Arts and Humanities, Cilvil Rights and Liberties, and Climate Change as issues.
Bill Maher has previously mentioned he gave $1,000,000 to a pro-Obama super Pac.
The petition had until February 14, 2016 to reach its 100k goal but, as mentioned earlier, reached that amount well ahead of its deadline. At the time of writing this article, the petition has reached over 169k signatures.
Apparently, the petition crashed the White House’s website.
So my request for Obama to come on Real Time crashed their website, so if u can't get on keep trying – and thanks!!https://t.co/MHxRC1wO44
